Bryan Fry

University of Queensland, QLD, Australia

Associate Professor Bryan Fry leads the Venom Evolution Laboratory within UQ’s School of Biological Science. His research is at the intersection of evolutionary biology and biotechnology, investigating how the dynamic diversification of snake venom influences clinical outcomes and treatment options. He has published >175 scientific articles, including first author papers in leading journals such as Nature and PNAS. His laboratory studies a wide range of venomous animals from snakes to vampire bats. Discoveries include that Komodo dragons do not use pathogenic bacteria for prey capture, but in fact have anticoagulant shock inducing venom. He has led expeditions to over 40 countries across the globe, ranging from the Amazon to the Sindh desert of Pakistan, and even to Antarctica. This has resulted in him being inducted into the elite professional adventurer society The Explorers Club. He is also a passionate science communicator, having been featured in over 100 documentaries for Animal Planet, BBC, Discovery Channel, National Geographic, and others.
